What this is. FDIC's Summary of Deposits is the canonical count of U.S. bank branches and where their deposits sit. Every FDIC-insured institution reports each branch's deposit balance as of June 30 each year. This is the 2025 snapshot — the most recent published as of mid-2026. Each branch links to its county; each county links to a per-county breakdown showing every institution and how many branches it operates there.
What "deposits" means here. The dollar amount each branch books — combined checking, savings, money market, and CDs from local depositors. Total U.S. deposits in this dataset: $18.1 trillion. The biggest single branch is typically a money-center NYC location with tens of billions in non-retail deposits.
What this doesn't show. Credit unions (NCUA data is separate; not included here). ATMs without a physical branch. Online-only banks that have no branch network (they typically report a single HQ branch). Trust company offices that don't take deposits. The 2025 SOD does not include closures or new openings since June 30, 2025 — the next snapshot will be published in early 2027.
